MEAN Study Overview
The Minnesota Electric Aviation Network (MEAN) Study, led by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) Office of Aeronautics, explores the integration of electric aircraft into the state’s existing aviation infrastructure. As electric aviation technologies gain momentum, they offer promising benefits such as reduced emissions, lower operating costs, expanded access to air transportation, and new economic opportunities across Minnesota. The MEAN Study responds to these trends by examining how the state can strategically prepare for this transformative shift in aviation.
The primary objective of the MEAN Study is to identify a strategic network of airports across Minnesota that are best positioned to support electric aircraft operations within the next decade. Rather than prescribing immediate infrastructure investments, the study lays the groundwork for future planning by offering a flexible framework to guide stakeholder engagement, policy development, and investment decisions. This approach ensures that Minnesota’s aviation system can evolve thoughtfully and sustainably, aligning with broader state goals for innovation and environmental stewardship.
